The annual Jay Race Paddleboard event was happening at Capitola beach in the morning so we slept in and enjoyed the blackout shades at the Fairfied, then ate lunch at Dharma’s before heading to the beach. Magically found parking as we drove in, waiting for a family to get into their van in the spot right next to yesterday’s. After enough sleep, our attitudes were right on and the rest of the day unfolded with the perfect casualness and cheer of a sweet, summer beach day. The tide had dropped a bit and started rising again as we paddled out and found a spot on slightly on the outside of the Saturday crowd. Everyone was lined up in slightly different spots, sharing small waves, which rolled in after some lulls. Didn’t take much of a wave to have a fun ride, though, and Max and I shared some party waves and had a few rights to ourselves. We waited for the first couple waves of each set to take most of the crowd, then went for the third. The water felt great, the waves were easy to catch, the crowd was mellow and happy. Classic Capitola sesh!
